The Distribution and Abundance Working Group is composed of three sub-groups, each focused on implementing marine bird surveys within a particular region of the offshore environment. One subgroup is focused on implementing surveys on vessels where ‘ships of opportunity’ exist – far offshore. A second sub-group is focused on tracking individuals in the mid-zone – the zone between pelagic waters covered by observers on large vessels and surveys conducted closer to shore. The third subgroup is focusing on the gathering the information needed to better understand marine bird interactions in nearshore/shallow water habitats.
